Impressive hockey skills were on display over the weekend of 4-5 May, as Kingswood College played host to some intense matches against Hudson Park. Many of the matches ended with very close results for the both the sides.
The Kingswood College boys’ 1st team played on Friday 4 May. From the start of the match it appeared as if the home team were determined to win. They displayed incredible team effort as they created numerous opportunities to score. Their constant effort in the first half came to nothing, however, as no points were scored in the first half.
The second half saw both teams playing their hearts out, despite noticeable fatigue from both sides. Kingswood managed to score the only goal of the match. After a nail-biting match, Kingswood walked away with a 1-0 victory. One of the Kingswood team members, James Kelly, said, “we played really well as a team, but we need to work on converting more of our opportunities into points. When you play strong sides, you need to score when you have the chance.”
The Kingswood girls’ side played on Saturday 5 May in scorching heat. Hudson Park immediately started off strong and dominated the game, scoring a total of nine goals on the unfriendly turf. However, the Kingswood girls fought until the very end and managed to score 4 goals against the visiting team. After the intense match, Hudson Park walked away with a convincing 4-9 win.
Despite the loss, Kingswood coach Bevan Bennett seemed optimistic for the upcoming season. “Our main goal [as a team]is to play as a group and not rely on individuals. We want to shift our mindset to making winning decisions and not ‘getting by’ decisions in our process.”
The upcoming hockey season for Kingswood College seems to be promising. It will give each hockey player the opportunity to have fun whilst improving their play.
