The warm weather encouraged supporters to come out and watch SEDRU hosted several local Eastern Cape rugby teams at the Grahamstown Oval on Saturday 10 March. The Brumbies’ first team vs Kowie United from Port Alfred was the final game of the day.
Crowds of people turned up for the main match which started at 5:15pm and the Brumbies’ supporters were eager to see their boys battle it out on their home turf. The opening 10 minutes of the game promised the Brumbies 1st XV team a well-deserved lead as Leclue Smith (x2) and Chad Gill raised the bar with amazing break through tries. By the third try, Kowie United seemed to have pulled their players together and put up a spectacular defence line which held the Brumbies off their attacking game, for quite some time.
After several attempts to succeed in their attacking and move forward with the ball, Kowie United opened up space beautifully to secure their first try and went on to convert the points. Things were looking up for Kowie United at this stage and the players needed that ego boost to move into a positive direction from there.
Disappointingly for them, that was it for Kowie, and even with numerous unsuccessful attempts at goal through penalty kicks, they were not able to stay above water. The Brumbies 1st XV made sure of that. Further tries from the Brumbies side placed Kowie United in an extremely tough position. The end of the first half tallied up to 37-7 points in favour of Brumbies.
Second half was a complete walkover for the home side, as the away players had clearly given up on the game. Their egos were discouraged and it was evident in their poor display in merely making descent efforts. Brumbies secured effortless tries minutes after one another and left Kowie United with just 7 points to show for it. It was painful for Kowie United to lift their heads, and to give it all that they had. In reality, it became impossible for Kowie to recover. The full time score, 84-7, gave Brumbies a much needed confidence boost heading into the remainder of the season.
In other matches on the day, Brumbies First Reserves beat Kowie United 46-14, Swallows beat Winter Rose 20-18 and Lilly White beat Wanderers 22-5. SEDRU were proud to host such a successful day of rugby, and look forward to the season ahead for all teams.
