54 Children from Holy Cross School performed their Christmas play in St George’s Hall recently. As is the school’s tradition, the play was written by storyteller Basil Mills and translated by the school’s staff.
The play is about how fire come to earth and the story goes that it was forever winter on earth, the animals were very cold and the sun stayed away. The animals gathered to make a plan to bring back the sun and wondered who to send. Owl was willing – but the problem was he couldn’t see in the daytime, so it was Leopard who saved the day.
Principal Karola McConnachie said the entire school was involved with the production – from making the costumes to designing the set. A mixture of traditional and new songs featured in the play.
Holy Cross School is an independent school founded in 2010 and funded by the Anglican Benedictine monks of the Mariya uMama weThemba Monastery. It is situated on the monastery’s Highlands Road property.
The school’s aim is to promote excellence in education, with the focus is on rural and disadvantaged children in the area and teaching is in isiXhosa and English, with bilingualism emphasised.
With the changes in the monastery, the school is in a new partnership with the charity, Love Must Act and has plans to expand to Grade 7 from 2019.
