Phase 2 of N2 Fish River Pass
The South African National Roads Agency SOC Ltd (SANRAL) said controlled blasting is scheduled to take place on the N2, section 13, between Grahamstown and the Fish River Pass every Tuesday until 24 October 2017, weather permitting. The blasts will occur at various positions along the N2 between KM 81 and KM 92. Blasting will take place between 2pm and 4:30pm and the road will be closed for approximately one hour during this time.
“Motorists are asked to plan their trips accordingly and to use caution when making use of the road,” said Mbulelo Peterson, Sanral Southern Region’s Manager.
Doc takes a Mustang
Soccer legend Doc Khumalo has been appointed a brand ambassador for Ford, and will be driving their iconic Mustang for the next 12 months.
“Doc Khumalo is a legendary South African football player, and we are delighted to have him sign up as a brand ambassador for Ford and driving our legendary Mustang,” said Neale Hill, director marketing, sales & service, Ford Motor Company Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) region. Not only is Khumalo one of SA’s premier football personalities, but he is extensively involved in CSI initiatives across sub-Saharan Africa through soccer development projects to lift the profile of the sport and create opportunities for young players.
“I am more than delighted to be part of the Ford family,” said Khumalo. “Driving in the Ford Mustang GT 5.0 will not only be inspirational to me but also to those around me.”
Road safety for all
South Africans must make a united and conscious effort to end the carnage on the country’s roads. This is the call from Cabinet as the country marks Transport Month in October, observed under the theme ‘Together we move South Africa Forward’.
“Cabinet calls on all to work together to ensure the country’s transport infrastructure benefits all and encourages road users to take responsibility and apply road safety as part of their daily lives. By working together, we can reduce the carnage on our roads,” said Cabinet in a statement after its fortnightly meeting. The Department of Transport and its entities will highlight the economic benefits of the sector by showcasing transport infrastructure services in aviation, maritime, public transport, roads and rail. Cabinet said investments in the transport sector are stimulating development and creating jobs as part of South Africa’s Nine-Point Plan, which aims to grow the economy and create much-needed jobs.

Engen’s offer in Transport Month
To commemorate Transport month Engen Driver Wellness, an annual mobile health awareness initiative run by Thubelihle Occupational Health & Wellness offered free health screenings to truck drivers in East London. The initiative has increased driver participation in voluntary screenings and improved health scores year on year. Over a seven-month period the programme will reach 21 sites in five provinces up the end of the year. Now in its sixth year, the Engen Driver Wellness continues to put health in the front seat for truck drivers by providing them with free health screenings. Operated nationwide at Engen Truck Stops and retail service stations, drivers are offered free voluntary screenings in mobile clinics. These are conducted by qualified nurses and councillors where blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, tuberculosis, BMI (Body Mass Index) and HIV are tested. As testing is voluntary, the incremental acceptance of health management as a path to longevity and wellbeing are important indicators that health empowerment is gaining traction. Given the long and lonely hours long haul drivers spend on the road and the stresses associated with the job, these interventions form a critical pillar of support.
