Water outages continue to hit the eastern section of Grahamstown.

Places such as Ext.6, Xolani and some sections of Joza are without water most of the day and when the water does come back on it is not potable and dirty.

Glades Mbonde, who stays in Ext. 6, told Grocott’s Mail that the unreliability of the water supply is frustrating because they are unable to do their laundry and the laundry basket is overflowing. Her granddaughter, Unathi Mbonde, said, “There is nothing we can do about it because when the water comes back it’s dirty and no one from the municipality tells us anything.”

Municipal spokesperson, Yoliswa Ramokolo, said the municipal team discovered that water levels at Botha’s Hill reservoir, which supplies the township, Kingsview and Oatlands area with water, are always low, so the municipality decided to close the valve every night to allow the water level to increase overnight.

The team also discovered that the contractor in Ext. 6 had damaged many pipes causing an additional loss of water. Ramokolo said the municipal team is busy fixing these leaks before opening the valve to avoid a further water loss.
