Grahamstown runner Richard Foss prepares to dive into Grey Dam yesterday morning in a bracing 7 degrees. The countdown has begun to the Polar Plunge, Grahamstown's annual midwinter dam swim, in just over four weeks.

This year's event is the 10th anniversary of the plunge, as well as the 10th time Foss will be taking the plunge into water at a temperature close to the freezing end of the thermometer.

The event on Saturday 21 June celebrates the winter solstice.

A team from PG Glass will be on hand to hand out hot drinks afterwards.

To mark their 20th bakkie-load of blankets handed out in their winter warmth campaign, they're asking participants to bring something warm for someone else.

PG Glass collects blankets and warm clothing for distribution to needy people in Grahamstown.

For 21 June, Accuweather.com predicts a clear day with a low of 11 degrees and a high of 20.

Sunrise will be at 7.17am.
