Terri-Lynn Penney won silver in the 35 to 39 age category while Natalie Ross won bronze in the 20 to 24 category.
Six of the athletes (Penney, Ross, John van Onselen, Deon Boshoff, Monica Strydom and Taryn-Maie Wille) represented Eastern Province, while Megan Hobson, who moved to Grahamstown from Johannesburg earlier this year, represented Gauteng.
Kingswood College pupil, Wille raced in the 16 to 17 category, racing the Sprint distance, which covered a 750m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run. She finished fourth in 1 hour 22 minutes 6 seconds.
The rest of the Grahamstown athletes covered the Olympic distance of a 1.5km swim, 40km cycle and a 10km run.
Penney finished the course in 2:47:30 while Ross finished in 2:35:32.
Hobson finished fourth in the 40 to 44 category in 2:49:06. She said she will definitely represent EP in future events.
Hobson also used the triathlon as preparation for this weekend’s Ironman South Africa which covers a 3.8km swim, 180km cycle and a 42km run. Ironman SA takes place in Port Elizabeth on Sunday.
Triathlon South Africa will soon announce their team to take part in the World Triathlon Grand Final, which takes place in Edmonton, Canada from 26 August to 1 September.
In addition to the elite and para-triathlon races, the world champs will showcase standard- and sprint-distance age group races, as well as an aquathlon, U23, junior and mixed relay world championships offering athletes the chance to compete in the same venue as the world’s elite athletes.
The ITU World Triathlon Series is made up of a total of eight races around the world, with the 2014 series starting this week end in Auckland.
The second in the series takes place in Cape Town from 26 to 27 April.
