Rhodes fine arts student Shalom Mushwana is collaborating across cities in an innovative digital design project.

Hoping to make their mark with him in the field are Justin Share, who is on a gap year, and Michello Jere, who is studying in Cape Town.

The former high school friends have been working together for almost a year on their concept, called The 13th Creative.

"Art is seen as arbitrary,” Share exclaimed. "Many artists, especially here in Grahamstown, tend to do things for their own personal gain and that is what our group aims to steer away from.”

They work in partnership with the more established Eastern Cape art collective Blah-ze-Blah. The 13th Creative contribute to the media and visual aspects of the collaboration.

Since their involvement with local project the One Art music festival in April, The 13th Creative have been laying low. They say they are working on material to expand their group and are focusing on developing their own connections and bases, apart from Blah-ze-Blah.

“We intend to grow as an independent audio and visual company in the community as a whole in the nightlife-based culture and artistic scene,” said Share.

The 13th Creative invites artists younger than 22 to join them in their quest for a united arts movement. They also invite other local independent artists to take part in an exhibition they plan to organise towards the end of the third term.

“We are focused on allowing young people to take the initiative to do what they love, helping them overcome the barriers of their circumstances,” said Share. Check out their Facebook page here!
