The St Andrew’s firsts travelled to Woodridge on Saturday as a stayers X1.
St Andrew’s lost the toss and were sent in to bat in good bowling conditions. Openers Andrew Rushmere and Mbulelo Mama played the conditions well, staying disciplined outside off stump and moving the score board along to 71 without loss after 17 overs.
Woodridge at that stage would have rued their missed run-out opportunities, but were re-energised when Mama played on outside off stump.
Rushmere chanced his arm one too many times and a quick single to mid-on resulted in a direct hit and saw him dismissed for a free-flowing knock of 36.
With two new batsmen at the crease and the ball turning, Murray Leith and Tyler Paul found it tough in the middle overs. The Woodridge side bowled well, halting the run rate.
Murray Leith fought hard and secured the St Andrew’s innings, accelerating into the last overs with a well-paced 50 and was well supported by Charles Bowren (24). With their strong start, St Andrew’s found their 190/5 total in 50 overs a little discomforting, having left a few runs on the pitch.
The Woodridge batsmen played their strokes, led by their captain, Thomas Hobson with an aggressive 51 not out from 63 balls. If Hobson had found a partner, the match would have gone down to the wire, but St Andrew’s stuck to their task, dismissing Woodridge for 113 and winning by 77 runs.
