Meg Stevens, the creator and designer of the cosy fleece wrap brand Mega-hug, visited the McKaiser and AVCC old age homes on Monday to give away over 100 Mega-hugs.
The over-shoulder wrap was created when Stevens' mother suffered from a stroke which paralysed her left side, leaving her unable to dress herself easily.
The simple design allows for one to keep warm with little interference, Stevens said, because the wrap “falls around you like angel wings”.
The Cape Town-based company had a stall at the Village Green during the National Arts Festival where Stevens sold over 100 Mega-hugs at R200 each, and for those who paid an additional R50 a care package was donated to an unknown person in need.
Each Mega-hug comes with a gift card and in it a small message from the donor.
“It’s hard to always remind people that we care for them but the Mega-hug acts as a symbol to show others that they are not alone,” Stevens said.
With her sister, Karry, and Rotarian trustee Millicent Armitage, Stevens handed out Mega-hugs to old age home residents as a gesture of kindness. “We are very blessed to know that there are people out there who care about us,” said the acting manager of McKaiser old age home Caroline Trollip.
The McKaiser residents sang for their guests and beamed appreciatively.
And with the cold Grahamstown winter upon us, they're sure to be kept warm with the knowledge that strangers out there care and a nice Mega-hug.
