Copper pipe thieves hit Victoria Primary School last weekend, leaving water mains running until Monday morning when staff came to work.

School secretary Ilza Lang said water was gushing out of the ground when they arrived at the school on Monday. She said the police were called and had promised to investigate.

There had been a church service in the school on Sunday, Lang said, but they had locked the gates when they left and they were still locked on Monday morning when staff arrived.

She said the thieves had probably climbed over the gates.

We have had a case like this before, when they stole copper pipes, but that was at the hostels, Lang said. She said the thieves had stolen the pipes to sell them.

When Grocott's Mail visited the school on Tuesday, the copper pipes had been replaced with plastic ones.
Police had not commented on the matter by the time ital Grocott's Mail ital went to press yesterday.
