Eyewitnesses say that at around 2.30pm the red Toyota Venture with 10 passengers came speeding down Dr Jacob Zuma Drive and when it turned right into Steven Street, the driver lost control.
Police and metro rescue officials at the scene said that the vehicle flipped and landed on two parked cars in a driveway opposite Fikizolo Primary School.
Medics report that all the passengers were admitted to Settlers' Hospital, five of them with minor injuries, while the other five had slightly more serious injuries. Makana Traffic Department Senior Superintendent Pierre Kapp said officers at the scene had subjected the driver to an alcohol test but that the results had not yet been released.
At the moment, this is just hearsay but there have been reports that the brakes failed and the taxi then crashed into a private yard. We are currently still investigating the accident. Police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said a case of reckless and negligent driving was being investigated.
According to the driver, he alleged that his brakes had failed, she said in a statement. Metro rescue officials on the scene have also alleged that when they asked the police for assistance with crowd control, the police drove away.
The allegations against the SAPS are extremely serious and the matter will be investigated as soon as we receive a statement, said Govender.
