Upstart is a newspaper project which aims to promote reading, writing and literacy. It is a paper for the youth by the youth, and works with Grade 8 to Grade 10 pupils from 11 Grahamstown schools, and one school from Kenton-On-Sea.
Upstarters received certificates of participation, and Nompumelelo Frans, a teacher from CM Vellem Primary School, was awarded a teacher of the year certificate.
Upstarters from Mary Waters High School received the Upstart Club of the Year Award (floating trophy), and Ziphozihle Goje from Nombulelo High School received the Upstarter of the year Award (Floating trophy).
Mabizela urged members to have confidence. “Don't rush into things. One misguided decision can destroy your future,” said Mabizela.
He said members should consider themselves very special.
“Upstart has given you a great opportunity. When I look at you, I see the future of this country looking bright. I see a winning nation. Never give up, and look after yourselves,” he said.
Mother of Upstarter Aphiwe Ngalo, Phoebe, said the project could not have been introduced at a better time.
"I'm impressed with the high standard of writing. I hope you will continue to inspire others,” said Ngalo.
She also paid tribute to Upstart Project Manager, Shireen Badat.
“Thank you for instilling a sense of pride in us,” she said.
