Almost lost amid the furore in January over the Auditor General's qualification of its 2009/2010 report on Makana Municipality – it issued a disclaimer – was an item concerning the Mayor, Vumile Lwana.

Now the AG's assertion that the mayor appeared to have used municipal transport for private purposes is back in the spotlight. The matter was discussed at last week's Ordinary Council meeting, where various aspects of the AG's report were discussed, along with suggested remedies. One finding was that the Makana accounting officer did not disclose or recover irregular expenditure amounting to R58 637, which resulted from the discretionary use of an official vehicle for private purposes granted to the mayor.

The minutes of the last week's meeting stated that policies would have to be reviewed and an Internal Audit Review of this matter would be undertaken by 30 March, "to determine the actual costs incurred which will have to be recovered from the Executive Mayor." It is rumoured that Lwana used the vehicle to attend an ANC birthday party, along with a party official. Grocott's Mail asked Lwana to comment on the matter, but he said he could only do this once the report was before council.
