of playing at the courts in the picturesque village of Sidbury.
A little bit of Albany tennis history was made last week when the Sidbury Tennis Club hosted their last day
of playing at the courts in the picturesque village of Sidbury.
One of the oldest clubs in the area, the club has been the site of some closely-contested league matches as well as more social events for many years.
Saturday’s round-robin tournament saw 30 players take to the courts, most of them from the two Sidbury
tennis teams, but also including visiting players from Grahamstown, Kenton and Seven Fountains.
Play was divided into three sections for the mixeddoubles in the morning, with two men’s sections and a ladies section being played after lunch.
Large numbers of children ran around and enjoyed playing on the cricket field and the swings and jungle gym at Sidbury School, while the tantalising smell of boeries on the braai filled the air.
Old partnerships (and even rivalries!) were renewed and a special atmosphere prevailed, making it a very rewarding day’s tennis, albeit a slightly sad one.
But this was nostalgia tinged with excitement, as it is not the end of the road for tennis at Sidbury. Players and opponents can look forward to the brand-new facilities at the relocated Sidbury Sports Club. Watch this space.
