Grocott’s Mail and the Rhodes University School of Journalism and Media Studies, in association with Radio Grahamstown, hosted a public debate about media freedom on 14 September at the Noluthando Hall in Joza.
The purpose of the debate was to address questions like 'Is the government trying to stifle the media?' and 'Do we have an unregulated press that is out of control?'
The ruling party is proposing a protection of information bill and a media appeals tribunal. Journalists say this is an attempt to squash media freedom. The ANC say that we need protecting from biased journalists who are harming individuals and the country.
Panel members for the public debate consisted of a representative from the ANC Youth League, the DA, Rhodes Journalism and the Unemployed People’s Movement. The audience included journalism students, media professionals and concerned members of the public.
