A drain has been leaking sewage in front of a home in Vukani township since January this year.
This has been affecting all the residents who live in Xoxo Street, most especially the family who live in the house where the drain is located. Water and sewage have been flowing directly from toilets into the open drain and spilling onto the street.
Nomawethu Mpangiso says: "I have been reporting this problem to the municipality from when it started in January, they just send people to fix it. I don’t think that the people they send are experienced. They would seem to have fixed the problem but when they are gone the leakage begins. "she adds,"My eight-year-old son developed a weird rash which later formed sores all over his body, when I took him to see a doctor, it was found that he had been in contact with water that contains waste."
There are many children who play in the street after school and another child has also developed a similar rash. The residents say that they are struggling to cope with the stench and that it is affecting their lungs.
The sewage is now creating a swamp.
Municipality spokesperson Thandy Matebese said, "I will take this matter up to myself and consult the municipality’s Infrastructure and Technical services directorate, and get reasons of this long term issue and find out what they have done about it."
