My first encounter with carrot cake was in primary school when a classmate brought it to school on her birthday. Carrot in a cake? Sies! And sure enough, I didn’t like it. But when I came to Grahamstown as a student in 2007 I decided to venture into carrot cake terrain once again.
My first encounter with carrot cake was in primary school when a classmate brought it to school on her birthday. Carrot in a cake? Sies! And sure enough, I didn’t like it. But when I came to Grahamstown as a student in 2007 I decided to venture into carrot cake terrain once again. I was pleasantly surprised that a vegetable could feature in such scrumptious confectionery, so now I am very eager to go from cafe to coffee shop, sampling my favourite cake.
Haricots bistro and deli
They bake their own carrot cake, using generous amounts of carrots and pecan nuts, which when combined with a cinammon tinge, dances like angels in your mouth. The cake is chunky and filling. If you
are not too hungry and are craving something on the sweet side, their carrot cake will just about fill you up. I have told just about everyone I’ve met to go to Haricot’s and try it. Your R18 will get you a wonderfully chunky slice of wholesomeness.
Cafe Dulce
Also quite a filling slice of cake as the portions are very generous. A bit pricier than most carrot cakes you’ll find in Grahamstown but worth every penny at R24.50. It is even served with a dollop of cream on
the side which complements the overall taste in a big way. The sour taste of the cream mingles ever so deliciously with the sweet of the icing. I found it to be a pretty cake too, with the middle layer being darker than the two outer layers.
Mad Hatters Coffee Shop
In the topsy turvy world of Mad Hatters coffee shop, a secret lives. Darker than most carrot cakes in town, it lacks the chunky carrot strips yet does not compromise on taste. The icing is simple yet delicious. In fact, it has none of the fancy trimmings you might find in and on other carrot cakes, which sets it apart from the others. Like the cake at Dulce, it is also served with some cream on the side, which once again amplifies the taste. Expect to pay R15 for a slice of Mad Hatters freshly-baked carrot cake.
Reddits Books and Coffee
I was told that I should come back a little while later as it was still in the oven. With the first bite, it tasted just like home. I started to have warm fuzzy feelings as each delicious bite travelled from my mouth down
into the various cavities. I sunk my teeth in and nearly went weak at the knees for a moment. Having had the advantage of tasting it fresh out of the oven, it took me back to days in the kitchen spent baking
and tasting. Really worth your hard-earned bucks with an ample slice arriving at your table. Reddits also charges R18 for a slice of their carrot cake.
