Students exitedly milled around between the stalls and clustered around club members, reading pamphlets and signing forms. There are over 20 sports clubs for students to choose from.

Students exitedly milled around between the stalls and clustered around club members, reading pamphlets and signing forms. There are over 20 sports clubs for students to choose from.
Most clubs played slideshows on laptops to showcase their sport and handed out fliers to passersby, but some employed more creative methods.
Two members of the Underwater Club pulled on their wetsuits and flippers and strapped on goggles. “It’s not very comfortable wearing this above the ground,” entertainment representative Emily Mundy admitted as she walked around.
A member of the Surf Club was strolling around in a black wetsuit with a surfboard under his arm. Both these clubs appeared successful at sign-up.
“We’ve been so busy tonight with the numbers of people that are signing up,” Mundy said. “And there are a lot of forms to sign, including indemnity forms – there is the risk of injury, as with all sports.”
The club offers spearfishing, underwater hockey and scuba diving and last year the club went on a shark dive. It was the first time for Surf Club media representative Phumzile Manana behind the sign-up desk.
“The first years seem eager,” she said. “Anyone can join the club – it’s not only for surfers.” Development representative Jess Gennrich added,“We’re happy with the number of members we got last year, and if we can get the same this year, then that’s good.”
Last year the club signed up around 140 people. Two first-year students were surprised at the range of clubs to choose from.
Both Tarryn Bulley and Jennifer Brown have signed up for the Rifle Club and First Aid. “They have a lot of different options,” Bulley said. “I’m happy to try something new.”
