Two American students who visited Grahamstown recently for an outreach programme have accomplished their mission and returned home to America.

Becca Knight of Williams University and Lizzy Bauman of Oauchita University returned home on Sunday after the successful completion of the educational programme conducted at Albany Baptist church in Joza.

The programme, Hands-On, is funded by the International Missionaries Organization (IMO). It started in January 2008 aiming to educate school children between Grades two and seven.

The two students spent four months in Grahamstown teaching children from township schools Maths and English. "We were sent here by the Baptist church of America to give tutorial lessons to the children," said Knight. "The Baptist church felt that children from the townships were disadvantaged and needed some extra help especially in those two subjects."

The students said almost all the schools from the township attended their programme and the children showed a great response during the period they spent with them.

The learners attended the lessons every day after school. On completion of the programme they were awarded certificates and also given some Christmas presents and stationery. Knight said they would like to thank the 20 other American missionaries who now live in South Africa for their assistance, and also the Rhodes University students that attend the Baptist church. The students said this is an annual programme that targets disadvantaged children from around the world including Asia and Europe.
