The local project manager for Grahamstown’s 2010 programme, Jeff Budaza, spoke on the various 2010 projects which are already happening as well as those that are in the pipeline.
Budaza, who is also the sport and recreation officer at Makana Municipality, was speaking at the Grahamstown Military Sports Club’s awards dinner recently.

In his speech he said he views 2010 “as a special prize to all South Africans in that we are the new South Africa”. He also saw the South African hosting of the World Cup as a “present to Mandela,” and urged everyone to play a role, “whether Bafana wins or loses, we have won as hosts”.
He said we must remember that it is the responsibility of all local government departments to organise projects related to 2010. One of the current projects Budaza spoke of was the adopt a ball project of which the aim is to see that every pupil from Grade R to Grade 8 in Grahamstown receive a soccer ball.
Budaza said the aim is to purchase between 7 000 and 8 000 soccer balls, which will be sponsored by businesses and local residents.
Budaza said Makana will also be one of the 42 public viewing areas (PVAs) in the country, of which there are six in the Eastern Cape. Grahamstown will host the PVA for the nine municipalities in Cacadu. The PVA is open to anyone, any time and there is no entry fee.
There are also a number of fan parks in bigger cities across the country, with Port Elizabeth hosting one.
Another project Budaza spoke of was the relationship they have with a German soccer side. A group of German U15 soccer players and coaches were in town last year, and a Makana side was scheduled to go to Germany this year. This did not take place, but, according to Budaza the tour will happen in May next year, looking to 2010 and beyond.
