Jim Cambray measured 6.4mm for the week after three days of scorching weather with temperatures over 35 degrees Celcius – “a real heatwave”. Paul Maylam reported 5.2mm of rain in Cathcart Street, while Robin Stobbs recorded 5mm in Grant Street. “Not a lot, but my wilting garden enjoyed it after those cooking days!” Robin commented. Temperatures for the week ranged from 18.5 to 35.5C. “Thankfully, not like the Boland where temperatures were well over 40C!” Jim said. It has been a relatively dry January, but some good rain is currently predicted for the middle of next week. Fingers crossed!

The Bachelor pass rate was 10% higher than last year, and VGHS principal Warren Schmidt described the quality of the passes as “phenomenal”: 89% of symbols above 50%; 48% of all subject symbols are As or Bs; 37% with 70% aggregate and above; 101 Subject A’s. The provincial Department of Health says it does not have funds to extend their contracts due to severe budgetary constraints. Residents, exasperated by the non-existent or sporadic water supply, have taken to social media and online reporting mechanisms, especially community WhatsApp groups, to vent, find answers and track down emergency water trucks.
