By ARNO CORNELISSEN Strange and wild turns of fate put me in the path of Mook Lion. One such turn was when a passer-by saw me admiring the street art in a Makhanda storm drain. “Mookie!” he called out. A mistaken identity. Nevertheless, the name stuck in my head, and one night I again heard that name called out. Finally, the figure had a face. He had stopped being a fable in my mind. It’s funny how someone could mistake me, much closer to the ground, for Mook, who is a tall mellow dude – “a lanky angel” is how one…

Dear editor, River Rescue says a huge “Thank you” to the Kingswood students who donned boots and gloves and literally mucked in to clean the river tributary just below Mary Waters High School on 15 July 2022. Some students had worked there some weeks before and were dismayed that the streambed was once again filled with litter. Nevertheless, they set to, tackled the mess, and worked non-stop, filling 10 HUGE yellow bags and really making a difference. Cleaning the Makhanda watercourses can be depressing – it’s like housework for the planet and needs to be repeated until people see what…

By SAM VAN HEERDEN The late Nelson Mandela is celebrated as a leading figure of the liberation struggle against Apartheid, renowned for a morality always turned towards empathy, forgiveness, and a commitment to the freedom and equality of all. At this year’s Nelson Mandela Public Lecture hosted by Rhodes University’s Department of Politics and International Relations, Prof Siba Grovogui grounded Madiba’s legacy in the historical and political thought of the African diaspora.
