All of Victoria Girls High School’s 82 matric candidates passed, with 91% achieving a Bachelor’s pass.
The Bachelor pass rate was 10% higher than last year, and VGHS principal Warren Schmidt described the quality of the passes as “phenomenal”:
- 89% of symbols above 50%;
- 48% of all subject symbols are As or Bs;
- 37% with 70% aggregate and above;
- 101 Subject A’s.
The following subjects had more than 15% of their learners get As:
- Afrikaans (17%)
- Maths Lit (18%)
- Life Orientation (54%)
- Physical Science (20%)
- Life Sciences (18%)
- History (16%)
- Accounting (27%)
- Visual Art (50%)
Only one child failed a paper out of 574 written.
Schmidt was “happy and relieved” with the results. He was particularly gratified by the quality of the passes.
VGHS produced 75 of Makhanda’s 331 public school Bachelor passes. Add to that Gadra Matric School’s 156 Bachelor passes, the city produced a total 487 Bachelor passes in 2021 – an unprecedented number.
The school has been hit hard by Covid-19, losing three staff members over the past two years. The school’s Covid-19 protocols were stringent and asked the Department of Education for permission every step of the way. But, they were able to fit in a great deal of teaching, especially for the Grade 12s.
“We prioritised the matric class. We can play catch up with everyone else, but we can’t with the matric,” Schmidt said. “They were here every day.”
“We coped with remote teaching but we’re pretty sure it didn’t work.”
