Household refuse remained uncollected for a second week following what the Makana Municipality Communications office described as “a serious mechanical breakdown” of the Makana Municipality’s compaction truck.
This was compounded by a late order for fuel, according to a Democratic Alliance (DA) Makan Facebook post.
The Municipality urged residents to keep their refuse inside their yards until further notice.
However, according to the DA, on Thursday, 25 November, the municipality obtained two LDV bakkies and one roll-on container truck to service Hill 60, the Graeme College area, Somerset Street, African Street and the CBD.
The DA post noted that in the past, “there have always been several back-up vehicles to remove the refuse in Grahamstown-Makhanda when the main refuse truck needs repairs”.
“We understand that last week there was one operational vehicle for refuse collection.”
DA councillors Brian Jackson, Luvuyo Sizani and Geoff Embling conducted an oversight visit to the refuse/cleansing department on Thursday. They noted that a roll-on truck was operational and offloading a skip of refuse.
“The Municipality has assured the DA that Mphele Engineers will assist with a truck and personnel and that they are making an effort to catch up on refuse removal this week. We have submitted a notice of question to the council asking what has happened to the other vehicles and what steps will be taken from preventing this incident from happening again,” the post said.
