The premier youth rugby tournament, which sees the U18 provincial rugby teams battle it out in an action-packed week, has seen over 260 Springbok players come through its ranks. This year, the tournament returns to Johannesburg for the first time in 11 years and will take place at St Stithians College from 17-22 July 2017. City Pirates soccer club’s U17 team will represent Makana in the 2017 Engen Knockout Challenge, taking place in Port Elizabeth. The tournament takes place at the Glenville Celtic Sports Complex, from 7 to 9 July. City Pirates booked their spot in the knockout challenge after winning the U17 2016 season of the Makana Local Football Association. The Valke on Thursday (6 July) took top honours in the Learners with Special Education Needs (LSEN) Week at Glenwood High School in Durban as they delivered an impressive performance to defeated Boland 25-12 in the final match of the tournament. The Valke built up an encouraging 20-7 halftime lead as they scored two tries and slotted over two penalty goals, while Boland were only able to score a converted try. Team Badimo Babolo won the inaugural Premier’s Cup Diski Tournament which took place at Fiddler’s Green, as part of the National Arts Festival programme. Badimo Babolo, made up of Sakhulutsha Academy members, remained unbeaten throughout the tournament. Although they were 1-0 down against Attackers at half-time during the final, they came back to equalize during the second half. The match then went on to penalty kicks. While teams did not have dedicated goal-keepers, the player-keeper was not allowed to stop the ball with his hands. Thus making it difficult during the penalty kicks. The top eight sides will battle it out for a place in the final of the Premier’s Cup Diski Tournament, currently taking place at Fiddler’s Green. The tournament, which forms part of the National Arts Festival programme, is organised by the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC), Makana Local Football Association (MLFA) and Makana Municipality. Online entries for this year’s Grahamstown to Sea (G2C) mountain bike race are open until midnight tonight (Wednesday 5 July) for anyone who would still like to enter. The fifth annual G2C takes place on the final day of the National Arts Festival, Sunday 9 July. Commencing at 8.30am, the race is organised by Albany Saints & Sinners Multi-Sport Club, and sponsored by the BUCO branches in Grahamstown and Port Alfred. The Learners with Special Education Needs (LSEN) Week continued to dish up exciting matches at Glenwood High School in Durban on Tuesday as the tournament, which marks one of two SA Rugby Youth Week competitions this week, entered its second day.
