The South African National Roads Agency SOC Ltd (SANRAL) would like to notify travellers of controlled blasting which is scheduled to take place on the N2 Section 13, between Grahamstown and the Fish River, on Thursday, 18 January 2018 and continue again on Thursday, 25 January 2018, weather permitting. Blasting will take place between 2pm and 4pm. The road will be closed for approximately one hour during this time. In a statement today, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) said it had noted that false advertisements have been circulating on social media about the recruitment of new members for the Military Skills Development System (MSDS). “The SANDF has not issued any advertisement with regard to the recruitment of new members yet,” the statement read. “The advertisement for 2018 recruitment will be published on the Sunday newspapers on 21 January 2018 and on the Daily Sun newspaper on Monday, 22 January 2018.” The SANDF said it neither sold application forms nor used recruitment agencies. Local athlete, Terri-Lynn Penney took her age group bronze medal at the recent Eastern Province marathon championships, which took place in Port Elizabeth. The event was the Aspen PE City Marathon, which doubled up as the EP marathon championship event. Penney finished the 42,2km champs in 3 hours 45 minutes 55 seconds, good enough for bronze in the women’s 40-49 age category. The South African Police Service has issued an urgent call for help to locate missing couple Guy Mclaughlin (40) and Lindsay Lamb (33), who have been on holiday in the Eastern Cape. Police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said the couple were going to travel Hogsback and then proceed up the Wild Coast, before leaving the Province to return to Gauteng. Ntsika Secondary School is among the Grahamstown District’s top five performing schools in the 2017 Matric exams. With its 2017 pass rate of 85.33% the school, which the Eastern Cape Education Department classifies as a Historically Disadvantaged Institution (HDI), saw a slight drop from its pass rate in 2016, along a trajectory from its 2012 low of 28.85%.
