By Stephen Kisbey-Green In a recent SANZAAR conference, it was decided that South Africa will lose two Super Rugby franchises, while Australia will also forego one of their franchises in order for the competition to revert to a 15-team format. The Southern Kings are one of the teams that have been heavily touted as one of the two teams to be axed from Super Rugby in 2018. In light of recent performances, however, it should be made obvious that the loss of the Southern Kings will likely mean more woe and dread for South African rugby than originally thought. Admittedly, the…
On Saturday 29 April, the Southern Kings romped home to an emphatic 44-3 victory over the Melbourne Rebels in what was an exiting and clinical performance from the home side. This was the Kings’ first consecutive victory in the Super Rugby competition. The Kings led by eight points at half time after two penalties from captain Lionel Cronje and an unconverted try from Wandile Mjekevu brought the Kings to 11-3 over the visiting Rebels. The Kings turned on the class in the second half, however, as they managed to score five unanswered tries, of which four were converted. The second…

The first weekend produced some highly entertaining and memorable rugby action, with a number of teams flexing some early season muscle. The Eastern Province Kings were however unfortunate not to…
The Springbok Sevens managed to strengthen their lead atop the HSBC Sevens World Series standings, despite their poor showing in the weekend’s tournament in Singapore. The Blitzbokke came into the Singapore tournament after having been blown away by Fiji in the Hong Kong Cup Final by 22-0 a week earlier. The South Africans have yet to win a tournament in Hong Kong, and the Fijians proved that 2017 would not be the year for South Africa to buck that trend. The Singapore sevens tournament saw numerous upsets and a fair share of surprising results. Neither of the series leaders, South…
