September is Hearing Awareness Month in South Africa. To increase the public’s sensitivity towards the country’s 500 000 hearing impaired individuals, it is imperitive to promote early detection and prevention of communication disorders in babies and infants.

Over the past few years, the Eco-Schools programme has been introduced to 13 schools in Grahamstown. The programme seeks to incorporate environmental education in the school curriculum to bring about awareness in the greater community.

Lovely local legs are being used to raise money for charity by three Grahamstown residents. The U15 Young Killers Football Club team has topped the log of the newly introduced season, thanks to the tactics of coach Mxolisi Dlengezele. The Killers are currently topping the Makana U15 Football League junior log with an extensive number of goals ahead of other teams.
Rhodes University’s Astroturf, situated behind the Sports Administration building, is currently receiving an upgrade. Included in the R3-million upgrade is a 38×18 metre practice astro section, which will be situated opposite the entrance to the astro/athletics track.
Grahamstown’s own road cycle event, the Makana Brick Grocott’s Cycle Tour takes place on Sunday 19 September. The race, which was previously held in May, has had a date change due to the last few races being held in cold and miserable weather.
It has already been a busy year for Ross McCreath, St Andrew’s pupil and founder of the Bathurst youth cricket club, the Tiger Titans. Ross recently returned from his second trip to London and has been shortlisted for, among others, the 2010 Murray & Roberts Jack Cheetham Memorial Award for which he was a runner-up in 2008.
