Grahamstown’s own cycle tour, the Makana Brick Grocott’s cycle race, has seen a move in dates. Held in May over the past few years, the race will take place in September this year. According to one of the organisers, Devin Cripwell of the Rhodes University Cycling Club it was decided to try find an alternative date after the poor weather of recent years.
An elderly married couple of Zolani informal settlement are living in fear after residents threatened to demolish their home last Thursday. Elliot Sam (92), and his wife Liziwe Sam (63) couldn’t believe it when the residents arrived at their home, ransacked it and demanded that they leave or it will be demolished.
Graeme College will host its annual rugby day at the school on Saturday. Nine first team rugby matches wil be played as well as a number of U14 and U15 games. The Graeme side will face Queens College in the main match of the day at 4pm and will be hoping to continue where they left off over the past weekend.
The Mary Waters 1sts and U15 rugby sides will face Kingswood College at the City Lords rugby field today. The U15 match will start at 4pm, followed by the 1sts at 5pm. The Mawas 1sts will be hoping to keep on a winning streak, after already having a few wins in the last week. On Saturday Mawas faced Nathaniel Nyaluza at the Albany Sports Club, with Mawas 1sts winning 17-14.
Zolani residents are fuming with anger following the municipality’s failure to repair a leaking tap which is flooding a street. Despite repeatedly reporting the leakage to the municipality last year, the residents say municipal employees have not visited the area to assess the situation.
So during our morning meeting our editors enquired as to whether any of us young strapping students would be running the Makana Brick night race. After a silence it was evident no one was planning to and in a moment of weakness and brave stupidity, I volunteered to run the race.
