Ten men, aged between 16 and 24 years old, are on trial this week in the Eastern Cape High Court on counts of housebreaking with intent to murder, assault, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, and the rape of a minor.

The 12th annual Graeme College Rugby Day on Saturday was “once again a massive success for the school and rugby in the Eastern Cape in general” according to the organiser, Nico van der Meulen. All the traditional heavyweights from the Border and Eastern Province schools were represented, along with an invitational side from outside the province.
A Queenstown man (36) appeared in the High Court in Grahamstown last week, charged with the rape of a 14-year-old mentally disabled girl who is also his cousin. According to the indictment, the incident happened in Nomzamo township in Queenstown in May last year in the one-roomed home of the accused.
The Unemployed People’s Movement (UPM) in conjunction with disgruntled residents from Vukani and local squatter camps led more than 300 residents in a march to the City Hall to complain about unemployment and lack of delivery of basic services.
The Makana Local Football Association Premier League continues this weekend with the final matches of the 2009/2010 season. It will therefore be the final battle for the local clubs to improve on their log standings. According to league official Chris Totobela, although the season was tough it proved to be a spectacle as plenty of goals were scored.
The annual Kingswood College Junior School Hockey Festival held last weekend was “brilliant and one of the better events of this festival,” according to the festival’s co-ordinator, Ian Knott-Craig. This is the 12th year the festival has been running and it is held to mark the beginning of the hockey season.
There have been serious water shortages across various parts of town over the weekend and have persisted throughout the week.
The Oppidan Committee is really impressed with the Oppidan Digs Olympics that was held recently. There were 28 teams with four students in each team. The teams mainly consisted of oppidan students although some residence students also participated. This is the third time this annual challenge has been held.
GRAHAMSTOWN has to wait a little longer for the much anticipated Woolworths Food. The extension to the store was originally set for mid- April this year, but has been put on hold due to a delay in the approval of the plans.
The annual vets tennis tournament takes place this weekend, with all matches played at the DSG tennis courts. There will be a welcoming party tonight with tennis starting at 8.30am tomorrow and continuing throughout the day. More tennis will be played on Sunday morning with the prizegiving scheduled for the end of play which will be around 1pm.
