The bypass around the sinkhole on the N2 between Grahamstown and Port Elizabeth will open to traffic at 10h00 today, the South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) announced yesterday.
The bypass, about 20km outside Grahamstown towards Port Elizabeth, was built as a temporary measure after a large section of the N2 collapsed due to heavy rain in October.
Motorists have been requested to reduce their driving speeds to 40km/h over the 600m bypass (view photo) because of the curvature of the road. There will be no stop/go signs. The bypass will be operational to July 2013 when reconstruction of the slip (by Concor Roads and Earthworks) will be completed.
SANRAL thanked road users for their patience over the last two months as emergency road works were being carried out, and the South African Police Service, Provincial Traffic Department and maintenance services for their assistance.
