A number of areas in Grahamstown have been hit by water shortages for the past week, despite the recent downpours.
At the Ordinary Council meeting on Tuesday, Municipal Manager Ntombi Baart announced that last Thursday's storm had damaged the pumps at Howieson's Poort dam, resulting in water outages in Joza, Cradock Heights and the Grahamstown Industrial Area.
She said the pumps would be repaired. However, sources told Grocott's Mail that one pump at Howieson's Poort was seriously faulty and had recently been taken to East London for repairs.
They claimed the shortages were thanks to the fact that on one day last week, not only were the pumps at Howieson's Poort dam in operation the whole day, but the Waainek treatment works were also, simultaneously, pumping water from Howieson's Poort dam.
This had caused the Waainek treatment works to overflow on to the N2 below.
