Top-flight rugby awaits Grahamstown rugby enthusiasts, as the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, in partnership with Eastern Province Rugby and Border Rugby Union, presents the 2011 Eastern Cape Super 12 Rugby tournament.
Mazwi Dingana, rugby development officer at EP Rugby, said the aim of the competition was to revive rugby in the province. Twelve top rugby clubs from EP and Border will compete in this competition, which will kick off on 29 January.
Grahamstown Brumbies is one of the six teams to represent EP. The Brumbies competed in the Super League Adams Cup in 2010 and, after winning their promotion/relegation matches, Brumbies will also compete in the Super League, Grand Challenge, in 2011.
The Grand Challenge is home to the top rugby clubs in EP and Brumbies obviously impressed EP Rugby last year, as they are now leapfrogging other top teams to take part in the Super 12. All teams will play a total of 11 matches in the Super 12. Brumbies will kick off against Berlin Tigers (Border) away on 29 January 2011, before hosting Progress (EP) in Grahamstown on 5 February.
The Brumbies coaching team believe the competition will be the ideal preparation for them, as the Super League Grand Challenge kicks off straight after the Super 12 on 9 April 2011. “We are looking forward to this exciting tournament and we are up for the challenge. We know it’s going to be hard, tough and physical, but it’s the best way to weight ourselves up against the best,” Said Xenephan May, Brumbies team manager.
Dingana said the Super 12 was one step closer to getting EP and Border rugby “together as one”.
