Some sharp work by Grahamstown security company Hi-Tec has resulted in the arrest of one member of a gang of six who robbed a local scrap metal dealer of R1 300 in cash and thousands of rands worth of copper and brass.
Hi-Tec’s Andre Wille said that at about 5.30pm on Wednesday, a scrap metal dealer in Victoria Road was held at gunpoint by six men, some of whom were armed. The businessman was unable to activate the panic button so the robbers escaped with thousands of rands worth of copper and brass, as well as R1300 in cash.
When Hi-Tec were alerted, the men had already left the scene. “Even after a search of the area by our response team no suspects were found,” said Wille. Then, in an unexpected twist, one of the suspects returned to the scrap metal yard shortly after opening time the following day.
Wille said: “The owner recognised him and immediately pressed the panic button. After combing the area, Hi-Tec guards Erich Nel, Sindile Makana, Jade Delport, Howard Jacobs and Mtobele Mpiyane found him hiding under the nearby train bridge and gave chase. The suspect was eventually cornered and arrested and he divulged information regarding the whereabouts of the stolen cash and scrap metal.”
The suspect was promptly handed over to the police.
