Makana Mayor Vumile Lwana's personal assistant, Noluthando Santi, was involved in a car accident on the N2 near Miki Yili Stadium on Tuesday night.
Santi, driving a red Toyota Corolla, and three passengers were travelling towards town when an oncoming white Toyota Corolla crashed into them.
Ntombekhaya Tsewu, one of the passengers, said the white Corolla hit them on the driver's side, they veered off the road and hit a pole next to the road. The car was brought to a stop by the pole, she explained.
Tsewu said only Santi was injured as she sustained a cut on her leg. When Grocott's Mail arrived at the scene just before 9pm, Santi and the driver of the Corolla were already in the ambulance receiving first aid.
Beyene Marko, a friend of the driver, said he was not sure how many people were in the car with his friend. Marko said his friend was slightly injured.
An eyewitness, Thanduxolo Maxhaulana of Livingstone Congregational Church, said Santi had attended a prayer meeting in Extension 6 and was giving three of the church members a lift home when the collision occurred.
"I was driving behind her when I saw the accident,” he said. A police officer who was at the scene told Grocott's Mail: "The police suspect that the male driver was drunk, so two police officers have taken him to hospital to get a blood sample so that it can be tested for alcohol."
Police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender confirmed the collision and said one of the drivers suffered from light injuries. The two cars were so severely damaged that they had to be towed away from the scene. The white Corolla's bonnet was badly torn and the front right wheel was dislodged. An eyewitness said he overheard the police say that the licence of the Corolla had expired in April.
