An exhibition featuring the history of black rugby players and teams was launched at the Dakawa Centre on Heritage Day.
The exhibition was put together by Phumzile Adam and his team of helpers and the research was funded by the National Heritage Council.
Makana Municipality funded Friday’s presentation event so Makana Mayor Vumile Lwana was the opening speaker, addressing the 150 plus guests who attended.
Lwana congratulated Adam and his team for putting the exhibition together and said he hoped it would stimulate the youth to participate in sport.
However, Lwana drew attention to the poor state of many sports fields in Grahamstown, saying the state of the fields should be addressed.
Adam was the master of ceremonies and encouraged veteran rugby players to get involved in rugby development in the township.
Adam could not confirm how long the exhibition will be up at Dakawa, adding that they have not yet found a permanent place for the exhibition, which consists of framed photographs, newspaper cuttings and the history of the various clubs.
