The Makana Traffic Department will be out in full force over the Easter weekend to promote safe driving and to prevent any accidents.
Roadworthy checks conducted by the traffic department will include selective law enforcement such as all unroadworthiness checks, including all aspects of road safety and fitness needed on a vehicle.

Checks also include driver fitness drivers licence, public driving permit and any other documentation needed as well as drinking and driving.
General law enforcement will include visibility as well as cellphone checks as it is against the law to talk on a cellphone while driving, unless you are using a hands free kit.
Pierre Kapp, senior superintendent at the Makana Traffic Department said they expect motorists to be tolerant towards each other on the road and he said it will helps if motorists drive with their headlights on and they must “restrict themselves from driving and using a cellphone”.
Kapp said motorists can be fined up to R1 000 if caught talking on a cellphone while driving. Kapp also warned motorists as well as their passengers who have a drivers licence to make sure any outstanding fines are paid for before they leave on their Easter trip as “motorists can be arrested for outstanding fines”.
On the fine, you will see two dates, one is when the fine must be paid by and the other is a court date. If you miss the court date a warrant of arrest will be issued against you.
This will be an unhappy event to those on holiday. If a passenger refuses to give their drivers licence, they can be asked for their date of birth and a refusal to give this or any other info can also end in an arrest.
Kapp said the road blocks are not intended to scare motorists but to prevent any accidents from happening.
