The annual Eastern Province archery championships took place on the Rhodes University Great Field on Sunday.
The competition was hosted by the Rhodes Archery Club and took the form of a Fita 720 round. The Federation Internationale de Tir a l’Arc /International Archery Federation (Fita) governs the sport.
The archers shot 72 arrows each; with six arrows a turn after which elimination rounds took place according to ranking.
The competitors with the highest and the lowest score competed first in the bronze medal match. The winners of the bronze match went on to the gold medal match and the winners of the gold medal match received a gold medal with the runner-up receiving a silver medal.
This was the first Fita 720 form of the competition in a long time, said Mike Wish, Rhodes archery club captain and competitor.
The reason for this is that 720 rounds are a requirement at certain international events this year. This year is a Commonwealth Games year so 720-rounds are held to prepare South African archers to represent South Africa internationally.
The senior matches took place over a distance of 70 metres, whereas the standard bow division and U14 matches were at a distance of 50 and 30 metres.
In the compound unlimited division Felix Meiring took the bronze medal, Selwyn Schaefer the silver and Jacques Venter received a gold medal.
In the compound veterans division Dennis Payne received a bronze, Dirk Hoskin a silver and Al Bentley walked away with the gold.
In the recurve division Lance Ho received the bronze, Tim Whelan the silver and Aidan van der Westhuizen won the gold medal.
In the compound unlimited women’s division Leanna Poole won the silver medal and Robyn Martin the gold. In the compound unlimited cadet men’s division Edward Hoskin received the silver medal and Gerrit Bosman won the gold.
In the standard bow men’s division Marcel Darier received the bronze, Marc Jaquet the silver and Greg Viljoen the gold.
Jess Wentworth won the gold medal in the junior women’s standard bow division at a distance of 50m. Lewis Dwyer won the gold medal for the U14 standard bow division at a distance of 30m.
Chris Mayer won the gold medal in the U14 compound unlimited division at a distance of 50m. The judges of the competition were Lorraine van der Westhuizen, who was the international judge, and the continental judge was David Martin. The Rhodes archery championships will be held at the end of April this year.
