When Peter Jarvis was in Sandton to pick up the award for player of December’s Cricket South Africa [CSA] National U15 tournament, he also had the chance to speak to his idol, South African test and ODI captain AB de Villiers.
Naturally, Jarvis, who picked up his award on 26 July, has long since followed de Villiers’s progress. Judging by the 32-year-old’s words to him, it appears there has been some reciprocation.
“I said ‘hello’ to AB. I said ‘I’m Peter Jarvis.’ He said ‘Yes. I’ve heard. U15 cricketer.’ He said ‘I’ll be looking forward to a bright future from you and I’ll be watching you,’ so that’s obviously quite nice.”
Jarvis captained Eastern Province at U15 cricket week, excelling with the bat in East London.
However, the Grade 10 pupil, who can also bowl left-arm spin, will not rest until he has achieved his schoolboy cricket goal.
“I haven’t yet made my hundred for the first team, but I’ve just been promoted to the top of the order to open the batting, so hopefully for this season to come, I can try that,” he said.
Now that Jarvis has the endorsement of the top-ranked ODI batsman in the world, it would take a brave man to bet against him.
