Media 24 journalists will present a course on School papers at Alexandria Christian Academy on 13 May 2006 as part of Media 24’s National School paper-project (NSP).
The main purpose of the course is to contribute towards excellence in South-African school paper journalism. Members of the School paper’s editors and aspiring journalists will be exposed to groundbreaking ideas, principles, and tendencies in journalism. They will also learn skills about practical production of a school paper.
“This is the first time the course has been run, in partnership with Media 24 and Die Burger. The focus of the course is on journalism and media production. The course is targeted at learners from 12 years and up,” said Alex Esterhuizen, the media centre supervisor.
At the course learners will learn what belongs in a school paper, how to collect news, how to write different kinds of articles and how to compose newspaper pages in a reader friendly way.
Emphasis is being placed on the fact that the school paper must be financially independent and students will learn about advertisement canvassing.
“Alexandria Christian Academy started a school paper last year and the project has been very successful,” said Esterhuizen, “and we are running this course because it will be excellent for the promotion of school newspapers and students interested in journalistic or media-related career paths.”
The cost of the course is R30 per participant and this includes a course workbook, a light lunch, and light refreshments for students and teachers.
The course is attended in informal wear. Students are to supply examples of their school paper if possible, to be discussed by the course presenters at the course.
This course can also be used by schools as a tool in Career Guidance. Students must be at least 12 years old. All High School pupils and teachers are invited to attend. All entries must be finalized by 3 May 2006.
