Over the weekend of 15-18 March, St Andrew’s College cricket represented the Warriors at the Cricket South Africa T20 Schools Tournament in Pretoria.
In their first match on Friday the St Andrew’s College side made a good attempt in chasing the Dolphins’ representative St Charles College’s impressive 170. St Andrew’s finished on 153/8 (Callum Francis top scoring with 45 off 29 balls). In the afternoon St Andrew’s College only managed 111/7 in their 20 overs vs the Inland Focus School from Gauteng, Queens High School. Matthew Schaefer top scored for St Andrew’s College with 42 off 29 balls. It was however not enough and St Andrew’s lost by six wickets in the 19th over.
St Andrew’s were well placed in the Saturday morning innings on 90/2 after 14 overs against Waterkloof High School, but Waterkloof did well to pick up wickets and stemmed the runs resulting in a below par 128/7 for St Andrew’s. James Mullins played well for his 54 off 48 balls. Waterkloof started well, before stumbling a little, but in the end won comfortably on 132/6. Liyama Dotwana took 2/19 and Malcolm Macgregor 2/35 in an attempt to stem the Waterkloof chase.
In the afternoon match St Andrew’s College were faced with a massive task to chase the 184/8 set by St Andrew’s School, Bloemfontein, H Koekemoer scored a superb 63 off just 29 balls for St Andrew’s School, with Macgregor taking 2/21. St Andrew’s College responded in fine style chasing down the total with 3 balls to spare. Callum Francis (58 off 39 balls), Guy Rushmere (32 not out off 18 balls) and man of the match Schaefer was in fine form with his 72 not out coming off 43 balls which included seven 4s and two 6s
St Andrew’s College finished the CSA T20 Schools Tournament with a spirited performance on the final morning (Sunday) defending a small total against Paarl Gimnasium, winning by 44 runs. Rushmere made 31 runs off 29 balls, and was supported by Nic Frances (21 not out off 25 balls). Macgregor (4/17) and Ryan Ford (2/12) were in fine form with ball in hand. Off spinners, Nic Frances and Macgregor bowled well in tandem securing St Andrew’s College’s win against Paarl Gim.
