In the first of four quarter final games as part of the 2018 New Year’s Cup, Grahamstown United marched on to the semi final with a 5-4 penalties victory over Amakhuze Royals after both teams failed to find the back of the net in regulation time. The Christmas Eve (24 December) encounter took place at JD Dlepu stadium.
In the second quarter final game, Manyora FC from Gauteng locked horns with Newbrighton Academy in a very closely contested game. Both teams threw everything at each other, keeping the fans on the edge of their seats. Manyora took an early lead and managed to hold on to it until the halftime break. The Port Elizabeth-based side came back firing from all cylinders and it was no surprise when they equalised with only less than ten minutes left in the game to force the game to penalties. Manyora won 5-4 after sudden death.
The other two remaining games will take place tomorrow (25 December) at JD Dlepu stadium at 13:30 and 15:00 respectively.
