On Friday 21 September, the most successful local football side, with seven regional league titles, African Connection visited Rhodes Trojans football First team on Rhodes’ King field. This local derby was supposed to take place on the last weekend of August to mark the end of the Women’s month.
The youthful African Connection, sponsored by Spar, started the game like a house on fire forcing the hosts to defend deep in their own half. The visitors created a lot scoring chances but the Trojans’ defence stood firm. It took a very brilliant strike from winger Nomveliso Zenani just outside the box to break the deadlock. Connection went to the break leading by one goal to nil.
In the second half, Rhodes started pushing forward and were rewarded with a long range strike from Zizo Bhalintuli to level the scores. Both teams were in search of a winner, but it was the visitors who took the lead with less than eight minutes left on the clock. The boot of their veteran striker and all time leading goal scorer Nwabisa Tyelbooi ran into a through pass from Zingisani Mazaka and she calmly slotted the ball into the far corner beyond Ncamisile Mbhele’s reach in the Trojan’s goal. The game ended 2-1 to African Connection.
