The Kingswood College hockey club embarked on a unique and exciting set of fixtures over the weekend of 20-22 July, hosting three schools across two days, with a double header on Saturday 21 July. The three schools included Kingsridge High School (KHS) (King William’s Town), Nico Malan (Humansdorp) and Herschel Girl’s School (Cape Town).
To kick the weekend off the, Kingswood Seconds, U16 A and U14 A played against Herschel, one of the top girl’s hockey schools in the country. The hosts lost all three fixtures, proving the visitor’s dominance and strength.
Kingswood’s focus then turned to their games against Nico Malan and KHS. Kingswood fared well over the day winning 9 of the 13 games played, losing one and drawing three.
The first team match against Nico Malan proved to be a one sided affair as Kingswood dominated possession and territory. The hosts won every phase of the game, eventually coming away with a 6-1 victory over their visitors.
Kingswood then played KHS two hours later, playing a great passing game, with good aggression in front of goal. Bianca de Klerk started the scoring with a powerful and accurate backhand shot into the nets in the far corner. This was followed by a goal by Megan du Preez, who tipped the ball into the goals after a great shot into the D. Amy Mills followed suit and rounded off the game, showing great skill and effort, with a deflection into the goals.
KHS attempted a strong fightback at the beginning of the second half as the Kingswood defence held resolute and Lushana van Heerden making some incredible saves to keep Kingswood in the lead. Kingswood won the game 3-0 in the end and displayed good attacking prowess as well as being fully committed to defence.
This performance capped off a very successful weekend for the Kingswood College hockey club, who look forward to the remainder of the season.
