In addition to the regular screenings at the Monument, Creative City has announced the return of Cinema under the Stars at Fiddlers Green. “On Friday 16 and Saturday 17 February, the big screen will be hauled up; the popcorn machine will make its way down the hill; and duvets, cushions and deck chairs will be the order of the day,” a press statement from Creative City read in part.
“We’ll be screening two double bills of great movies: The Secret Lives of Pets at 7pm and Avatar at 8.30pm on Friday; and Monsters University at 7pm and The Rocky Horror Picture Show at 9pm on Saturday.”
Friday night kicks off with The Secret Lives of Pets – an animated comedy about the lives our pets lead after we leave for work and school. Rotten Tomatoes rates the film highly, describing it as, “Fast-paced, funny, and blessed with a talented voice cast, [this film]offers a beautifully animated, cheerfully undemanding family-friendly diversion.’
Avatar, the spectacular, futuristic sci-fi epic by James Cameron (Titanic, Aliens) features Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and Sigourney Weaver among others. Avatar tells the story of an ex-Marine who finds himself thrust into hostilities on an alien planet filled with exotic life forms.
On Saturday at 7pm, the prequel to Monsters Inc lights up the big screen. Monsters University tells the story of how Mike and Sulley met and became friends while they attended the ‘School of Scaring’. “The Pixar crew has lovingly refashioned the R-rated fraternity comedy into a G-rated adventure that kindergarteners, frat brothers, and tired parents can all enjoy equally and without reservation.” – Common Sense Media
Creative City then asks residents to hire a babysitter so they can watch The Rocky Horror Picture Show, “a screamingly funny, sinfully twisted salute to sci-fi, horror, B-movies and rock music, all rolled into one deliciously decadent morsel… Join Tim Curry, Barry Bostwick, Susan Sarandon and rock star Meat Loaf in the most popular cult classic of all time,” according to the studio 20th Century Fox.
Tickets are R30 for adults and R20 for children, pensioners and students – for one film or both. There will be food and drink stalls too.

Despite smallish audiences at the Friday night films, organisers hope to see more schools and, on their return, university students supporting the films screened at the Monument. On 23 February, the monument will screen the stage production of the Uk’s National Theatre Live production of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead at 7pm.
