There was plenty action at the Oval over the weekend, as the Brumbies hosted the annual Fabian Juries 10’s rugby and netball tournament.
The event started with a 5km fun run which took place around the neighbouring streets. Overall winner of the fun run was Granville Isaacs. It was then down to business as the neighbouring communities took on each other at netball and 10’s rugby matches.
Ghost Town proved to be the top netball side on the day, as they went on to win the netball tournament, beating Rhodes Rockstars in the final. They also dethroned three time champions Vergenoeg Eagles who came into the tournament as defending champions. Team Cellotape took third place.
In the 10s rugby format, it was Cellotape who won the tournament for the second year running as they beat Ghost Town Lions 29-0 in the final. Currie Park Rebels took third place.
Kelvano King of Cellotape was clearly on top of his game as was named the Player of the Day, the most prestigious award at the tournament. However, it did not stop there for King, who was won the Top Try Scorer award, scored seven of his side’s tries during the day, and collecting the award for the Top Points Scorer with a total of 59.
Giuliano Flotman said the event was a major success. “We do have some challengers and understand that tournament not perfect,” he said, “but we will always try and improve.”
Flotman thanked all for taking part, as well as the sponsors, referees and officials who helped on the day, while congratulating the winners: “Congratulations to Ghost Town Lions netball for winning their 1st tournament and to team Cellotape for back to back 10s rugby tournaments”.
“I want to conclude by saying to Brumbies thanks for this opportunity to lead you the past five years….I will be stepping down to give energetic, well-resourced and vibrant group of members opportunity to lead the club. Brumbies I salute you,” said Flotman.
Brumbies media officer, Chesley Daniels said the event is named after Juries because the club chose to “honour him as one of Grahamstowns legend in this short format of the game”.
“Juries was a great servant and example to our community and his achievements locally, nationally and internationally speak for itself. We acknowledge his performances in this fashion and what he has done for us over the years,” said Daniels.
