Each year the Rotary Club of Grahamstown celebrate the Christmas Season with a pageant at the Cathedral of St Michael and St George with carols and a depiction of the story of the birth of the Christ Child accompanied by carols and candles.
Rotarians read stories around the birth of Jesus and sing carols with children joining in dressed as shepherds, kings, angels and animals to pay homage to the Holy Family. The cast is directed by Glynnis Suttie and Colleen Vassiliou.
When the ‘Kings’ or Magi present their gifts, children are invited to bring toys, which will then be distributed by the Rotary Anns. Toys may also be delivered to Videotronic in Church Square. The funds raised from the event are shared between the House of Joy, the Angus Gillies Foundation and Eluxolweni, three local child centred concerns which have collectively done wonderful work for the disadvantaged young in our district.
At the end of the pageant the cast lead the congregation out of the Cathedral on to Church Square when the Hospice Tree of Light is switched on.
This year Carols will be held on 21 November starting at 7pm. Everyone, young and old are welcome to attend and be enchanted with what is always a joyous occasion. Children interested in taking part can come to the Cathedral at 5.30 on Monday 20 November for a short rehearsal, or just turn up on the Tuesday by 6pm. There are plenty of costumes to go around.
