Over 300 road runners are expected to take to Grahamstown streets and outlying roads in the annual SPAR Oak Cottage Mountain Drive half-marathon on Saturday, 12 August.
The 21.1-kilometre participation league event, sponsored once again by SPAR Oak Cottage and Grocott’s Mail as media partner, is sanctioned by Eastern Province Athletics (EPA) and organised by Grahamstown-based Run/Walk for Life Athletics Club. The race will start and finish at Rhodes University’s Prospect sports complex at the western end of African Street. Walkers will have the chance to participate in the half-marathon and will start with the runners at 8 am.
From the start, athletes will make their way along African and Somerset Streets towards Makana Resort below Grey Dam. There, they will begin the tough uphill Mountain Drive climb, followed by the descent to the N2. The nine-kilometre Mountain Drive section is all gravel road.
After crossing the N2, the field will enjoy a flat, tarred section through the industrial area, around the golf club and back into Cradock Road. Athletes will then finish off with a light four-kilometre jaunt through the suburbs to the finish on the Prospect field.
Runners and walkers will have four hours in which to complete the course before the cut-off at 12 pm.
Late entries will be accepted at the Prospect sports complex from 6 am to 7.45 am on the morning of the race. Entrants must be 16 years of age or older on the day of the race. Online entries are open at www.roag.co.za
