Graeme College pupil, Lloyd Vos, took fourth place overall in Sunday’s Grahamstown to Sea mountain bike race, winning the junior section.
Sunday’s annual Grahamstown to Sea (G2C) mountain bike over 58km race took cyclists from the Buco warehouse in the industrial area to Rosehill Mall in Port Alfred. Athletes crossed over Mountain Drive, made their way down Woest Hill and up the other side and then along the Southwell Road.
A total of 290 finishers were recorded, with Jason Peach from East London the overall winner in 1 hour 47 minutes and 25 seconds, some nine minutes off the record held by Grahamstown’s Jason Meaton. The record holder was unable to cycle due to beeing part of the organising committee.
Peach was followed by last year’s winner, Grant Daly, from Port Elizabeth in 1:50:22, with Bruce Cambell from PE third just 12 seconds further back. Women’s winner was Tracey Campbell who finished in 2:05:25, while Shannon Kirkhoff, who led for much of the way, had to settle for second place in 2:07:15. Jolene Meyer finished third in 2:17:04, while the first Grahamstown woman, Jolandi Botha was fourth overall. Botha was also the first veteran (40 to 49) woman home. Denise Mclean won the women’s Master (50 to 59) section in 2:42:57.
Kevin Watson won the master (50 to 59) men’s section in 2:02:06.
The fifth annual G2C race took place in near perfect cycling conditions.
Organised by Albany Saints & Sinners Multi-Sport Club, and sponsored by BUCO (Grahamstown and Port Alfred branches), the event took place on the final day of the 2017 National Arts Festival.
Cyclists traveled from all over the Eastern Cape and beyond.
